His training under Roshi explains his surprising combat competence — he once wielded a massive axe with skill, defended his mountain against invaders, and possessed the Ox-King Style martial arts that he passed to Chi-Chi. After Goku inadvertently extinguished the magical fire that had trapped the Ox-King on his mountain for years (by extinguishing the Fire Mountain with a Kamehameha), the grateful king became a steadfast ally of the Son family. His role in the series is almost entirely domestic: he funded his daughter's household when Goku's complete ignorance of money left the family destitute (his royal treasury was eventually depleted by Goku's appetite), doted on his grandchildren Gohan and Goten, and remained a gentle, if physically imposing, presence at family gatherings. The Ox-King's most significant plot contribution was introducing Goku to Chi-Chi as children, unknowingly sealing the marriage that would produce the universe's greatest warriors. His design — an enormous, heavyset man with a horned helmet, a wild beard, and a battle-axe that looks borrowed from a folklore giant — is in stark visual contrast to his personality: a kind, slightly dopey, and emotionally vulnerable old man who just wants his family to be safe and happy.
