King Kai's teaching method of telling terrible puns and cracking himself up became one of the series' most endearing recurring gags. Despite his comedic presentation, King Kai's wisdom and power are genuine: he can telepathically communicate across the universe, sense energy signatures from galaxies away, and even trained Piccolo, Tien, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu during their post-Saiyan Saga afterlife training. His role diminished as his students surpassed him, but King Kai remained a trusted advisor throughout Dragon Ball Super. His most consistent character trait, aside from his love of bad jokes and his pet monkey Bubbles, is his exasperation with Goku's habit of getting him into trouble, most notably when Goku brought Cell's self-destruct to King Kai's planet, killing the Kai (again) along with Bubbles and Gregory.
